The new and
old Bockbrauerei:
A district
with a rich
history

It’s quite an amusing coincidence that a man named Hopf (German for ‘hops’) helped introduce Berlin to a new beer culture. Georg Leonhard Hopf, a cooper from the Palatinate region, arrived in the city in 1820. He soon opened his own cellar and wine shop. Dissatisfied with the standard Berlin beer of the time, he brewed his first Bock beer in an old wash kettle, according to a Bavarian recipe. He wasn’t the only one who loved it; Berliners were also thrilled with this strong beer creation.
So, in 1838, Hopf took a bold step: he built a brewery complete with beer garden and two large halls and organised music and dance events. The concept proved a resounding success. Production volumes grew year after year, though the First World War ultimately spelt the end for Hopf’s Bock brewery.
After the Second World War, the former brewery site became home to businesses from various sectors, including a liqueur factory, a paper merchant and a coffee roastery. In 2022, BAUWERT acquired the ageing site, intending to carefully redevelop it as a mixed-use district and preserve it for the future.
